Note from the president

Wow, hard to believe it is August already. The year is flying past and business is booming! Your West Michigan NKBA council understands how valuable your time is and we strive to offer events that are educational, worthwhile and fun! If you have attended any of our events so far this year you know that we have been working hard to offer more CEU approved events in a variety of topics both traditional and un-expected. We have also implemented some fun, free, no registration required social events with our “What’s on Tap” local brewery meet-ups. Our next one is August 16th. We will be in Kalamazoo, Holland, Grand Rapids, and Lansing. Pick which location works best for you! We plan to continue to host these events in months where we do not have an official meeting / event planned.

Looking forward to the rest of the year we are bringing back many popular events.  For the 2nd year in a row we will be hosting a Vendor Night in October. It’s West Michigan NKBA’s own personal trade show! Last year’s event at the Downtown Market brought a variety of vendors from across the industry together to display products and talk about current trends. We are hoping to grow the event this year with an even more diverse group of vendors and attendees. Stay tuned for further information! After a bit of a hiatus we will once again be hosting a Student Design Competition with students from several area colleges taking part. We have been working with professors to integrate the competition into fall semester lesson plans to fully expose students to the career opportunities available in the kitchen and bath field. The awards ceremony will be tied into our annual Holiday Party in December.

On the national level NKBA has implemented several changes going into 2018 in order to help the local chapters be successful in their endeavors. We are now referred to as a Chapter Council vs. a Chapter Board and have been paired down to 5 positions within the Council from the previous 9 positions to streamline leadership. With this change, we will be using the power of committees to plan and implement events. Any NKBA member is welcome to become part of a committee. It is a great way to get involved and give back with short-term obligation. If you are interested please reach out to any Council member via email or at our next event! Enjoy the final days of summer and we hope to see you at an event soon!

Thank you
Alisha Doorlag
